Cruising Costs estimates a standard fixed-rate amortizing vehicle loan. The payment uses the amount financed, annual percentage rate and selected number of monthly payments.
Amount financed
Vehicle price plus estimated sales tax, fees and financed add-ons, less cash down, net trade equity, rebates and incentives. Net trade equity is calculated automatically as trade-in value minus the amount still owed; negative equity increases the amount financed.
Affordability estimate
The app works backward from the target loan payment to estimate principal, then adjusts for taxes, fees, down payment, derived net trade equity and rebates to estimate a vehicle-price target.
Payoff planning
Advanced mode can project a payoff timeline from a first payment date and an optional fixed extra monthly payment. This projection uses standard monthly amortization and does not model lender-specific odd-days interest, deferred first payments or payment-processing rules.
Budget Fit
The fit check subtracts entered expenses, savings and total monthly vehicle costs from take-home income. Comfortable means the requested cushion remains; Tight means cash remains but the cushion is not fully protected; Over budget means the estimate creates a monthly shortfall.
Rounded estimates can differ from a lender or dealer disclosure. Always verify the itemized out-the-door price, APR, finance charge and total of payments before signing.
Glossary
APR
Annual percentage rate: the annualized cost of borrowing used to calculate the loan payment.
Amount financed
The principal borrowed after taxes, fees, add-ons, down payment, net trade equity and rebates are applied.
Trade-in value
The estimated amount credited for the vehicle being traded.
Trade payoff
The amount still owed on the vehicle being traded.
Net trade equity
Trade-in value minus trade payoff. Positive equity reduces the new amount financed; negative equity increases it when rolled into the new transaction.
Out-the-door price
The total transaction price including vehicle price, taxes, required fees and selected add-ons before financing adjustments.
Total vehicle cost
The loan payment plus the monthly insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, parking, toll and other estimates entered in the app.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a loan approval or dealer quote?
No. Cruising Costs provides educational estimates. A lender or dealer may use different taxes, fees, timing, rounding or underwriting terms.
Why can a dealer payment differ from the app?
Verify that the vehicle price, trade value and payoff, taxes, fees, add-ons, APR and loan term match the deal being offered. Small lender rounding differences can also occur.
Does a shared estimate include my budget?
No. Income, housing, debt, essential-expense, savings and cushion fields are excluded from shared result links.
How does negative trade equity work?
When the amount owed on the trade is greater than its value, the difference increases the estimated amount financed if it is rolled into the new transaction.
Does an extra payment change the required payment?
No. The Advanced payoff planner models a fixed additional monthly amount separately to estimate a faster payoff date and potential interest savings.
Can the calculator work offline?
After the PWA core has been cached successfully, the core calculation files are designed to remain available offline. Visual assets may be refreshed separately when a connection is available.
